As I write this, it has been about 10 hrs since the New York Knicks updated their offer to the Denver Nuggets. Now the offer proposed by the Knicks would include Wilson Chandler, Raymond Felton, Eddy Curry's expiring contract, the draft pick from Mineosota and now the choice of Landry Fields or Danilo Galinari. It has been reported that the Denver Nuggets are more interested in Galinari than Fields which would make sense because Galo, would be a quick solution to the hole left in the #3 spot by Melo.
Ok that is not the point of this op-ed piece, the point is to remind Knicks fans why Melo is more likely to be wearing blue and orange sooner then later. I will make my argument on a point by point basis..
#1. The most obvious would be the fact that since July, we have known about the "Toast" this was at Carmelo's wedding to Lala Vasquez, were it was witnessed and reported, that a toast was made between Melo,CP3 and Stat, they vowed to be the new big 3 in NY. We knew from than that Melo had the desire to come back to his state of birth
#2. Lala Vasquez Anthony. Mrs Anthony has her own desires to be in NY, once an MTV host she is reported to be looking to relaunch her career. It does not hurt that most of her family is
from the Bronx.
#3. The Denver extension deal has been on the table for 6months, at anytime Melo could have signed for his $65 million dollars and 4 more years with the Nuggets. However there was a sense that the Nuggets front office was in disarray and that Masi Ujiri, the New General Manger of the Denver Nuggets was not hired for his executive skills but more for damage control and as a away to court Melo.
#4. Jim Dolan's and Donny Walsh's public hide. The Summer of 2010 was the year the "chosen one" was to grace us with his presence. #23 made it clear to the Knicks front office and the rest of the league that he wanted to be where Flamingos frolicked and where a man named Marino was the original "King". That summer the Knicks went 1and1 with missing on #23 but getting big Stat. However the fan base knew that wouldn't be enough to win championships..
#5 The idea that the Nets would be an ideal place for Melo is almost laughable.. Before even trying to contend in the NBA, you get a sense that the Nets are more occupied with preparing for there move to Brooklyn. Mihkal Prokorov, is a shrewd business man and all around cool dude, But, I dont think He is as involved with the basketball end of things as he is with the business side of things. He has left that to Mr. Billy King, longtime former Sixers GM and now the new one for the Nets who has yet to make any public noise or impact. Although the Nets can talk of Jay-Z and being the the city with the most street cred in the world, the fact remains that if a deal went through, Who would Melo be playing with? An aging Chauncey Billups, an unproven Derrick Favors a promising Chris Humpries and an underachieving Brook Lopez. I believe Melo wants to be a champion sooner than later. He wouldnt have the pieces around him to make that work.
#6. The pieces we would be giving up would be worth getting Melo. In D'antoni's system everyone looks like a star. I have come to think of D'antoni as Coach Steroids, because all the people who have played for him,their stats increase so much it makes them look like superstars, so its not that Danilo,Chandler or Felton are that good, its that Coach D's system allows them the best use of their talents. We can find pieces like that through out the league to flourish in his system.
Knicks Fans dont despair we will be alright !!
